Pearl of the Ocean
About the Work
After an array of renderings created by Kevin, the client selected " Pearl of the Ocean." This 25ft tall abstract spiral sculpture, crafted from polished stainless steel, features a 48 inch ball painted in pearlescent color-shifting paint—commonly used in the automotive industry—to symbolize a gigantic pearl crowning the sculpture. This sculpture marks the first in a hopefully long line of large-scale abstract stainless steel pieces planned by Kevin. The creation of the sculpture spanned a year, with mirror polishing consuming seven months of the process.
Acknowledgment is due to Kevin's apprentice, Josh Guretzki, who mastered the challenging process of mirror polishing stainless steel and persevered through the labor-intensive task of polishing the massive sculpture over several months. Upon completion of the sculpture at his workshop in Chilliwack, BC, Canada, Kevin constructed a substantial shipping frame to secure the sculpture in a horizontal position.
This enabled the safe transportation of the sculpture over 2000 miles to Cabo, Mexico, due to its inability to be shipped in any other manner. The sculpture was specifically designed and constructed for the client's newly-built residence on the Cabo coastline. The client's luxurious home was architecturally designed to showcase the sculpture as its focal point. The colossal sculpture was lowered into the home via a crane through a skylight. The base of the sculpture was installed on the ground floor within a water feature, while the top of the sculpture, including the "pearl", was designed to be the grand feature visible upon entering from the front entrance into the expansive 16,000 sq. ft. luxury home. The client personally named the residence, which is also known as "Pearl of the Ocean"
